“UNASUR: A space that strengthens Energy Integration” is the title of a publication jointly produced between the Latin American Energy Organization (OLADE) and the Union of South American Nations (UNASUR), whose launching was held on June 7th, 2012 in Quito.

The launch event was held at UNASUR’s headquarters and was attended by the Secretary General of UNASUR, Maria Emma Mejia, OLADE's Executive Secretary (A) and the Director of Integration, Fernando Ferreira, and the Adviser to the Ministry of No Renewable Resources of Ecuador, Julio Cardenas.

This publication is an analysis of the energy overview of UNASUR’s countries, and the historic progress in the areas of energy integration within the Region, including the consolidation of the South American Energy Council and the structure of the South American Energy Treaty.

During his speech, Fernando Ferreira noted that while South America has important renewable and non renewable energy resources, it shows certain asymmetries in the location of these resources, which makes it essential to work on regional and sub-regional integration processes. In addition, he stressed the importance of renewable energy enhancement, which now constitutes 31% of the Regional energy mix; an indicator that is well over the target of reaching 20% , set by Europe in 2020.

“UNASUR is the linchpin by which it is important to structure a strong position, in line with the objectives of the Treaty, in the defense, promotion and sustainable use of these vast resources. UNASUR, in his short life, has proven to be a successful organization that is moving toward the consolidation of the goals of its leaders and its people. Energy and physical infrastructure are the pillars on which this prosperous future can be built.” UNASUR's Extract: A Space that strengthens energy integration.
